March 1992: Three Days Across America

    In March 1992, I quit my job as a big-firm attorney. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do next, but I wanted to take my time deciding.

    I spent most of the next six months driving around the country -- usually at a much slower pace than on this first trip: a three-day dash the length of I-80, from New York to San Francisco.
