The Signs of 66

Part of the fun of driving Route 66, or any other old road, is cruising down the old commercial strips. In the pre-Interstate days, these strips were the main route through town. Local motels and restaurants competed for travelers' patronage by erecting ever more elaborate and colorful signs.

The following pages present the best of the surviving signs, as well as a few which have disappeared since I was able to photograph them. Pick a state, or just start in Illinois and follow your way from Chicago to L.A. along old Route 66. (Warning: some of these pages may load slowly.)

The Signs of 66 - State by State
Oklahoma: Miami to Chandler
Oklahoma: Oklahoma City to Sayre
New Mexico: Tucumcari
New Mexico: Santa Rosa to Albuquerque
New Mexico: Grants to Gallup
Arizona: Holbrook to Flagstaff
Arizona: Williams to Topock
