Thursday, August 20, 1992... After a few days' rest at home, I'm off for the year's last big road trip: US 2 west, US 40 east. Left home at about 9:15 this morning, figuring to cruise through Ann Arbor right before dark and stop for the night in Flint. Hadn't bargained for an overturned tractor-trailer spilling oil onto I-80, causing a two and a half hour backup! I read the Times, Baseball Weekly, started Garry Wills' book on the Gettysburg Address, and took a couple of long walks to fill the time, which was not what I'd planned. Once mobile again, though, everything went smoothly. The backlog cleared up, and I raced across Pennsylvania and Ohio. Didn't reach Toledo until about 9:00, though, which made a visit to Ann Arbor superfluous; instead I just headed up I-75 to Flint, where as I'd expected), there was no trouble finding a room. Arrived in time to hear the Bush and Quayle acceptance speeches -- George whined, as usual, and Quayle invented statistics to support his lawyer-bashing claims and generally sounded like the cretin he is. If I don't get a paying job ASAP when I get home, I might sign on with the Clinton-Gore people through the election. The prospect of another four years of this crap makes me want to vomit...
