Mitchell is the home of Sen. George McGovern
and the site of Dakota Wesleyan University, but for road trippers
the town could be known as the Gateway to the Corn Palace.
This "sleeping Mexican" theme is
common to a lot of Western motels. Never mind that Mitchell, SD
is more than a thousand miles from the Mexican border...
Both the Corn Palace Motel and Chef Louie's are still in business:
The "Flamming Cabins" later became the "Flamingo Motor Court."
The few remaining "Happy Chef"
statues are prime targets for pranksters. Gee, I can't
imagine why...
Just look at that nasty gorilla attacking the
sweet little jackalope!
I thought English was the native language in these parts...
A couple of the signs along Mitchell's
classic Main Street, en route to the Corn Palace. Radio station
KORN is based here, too...
